A higher number on the scale after you start a supplement can raise questions. Does ashwagandha make you gain weight, or could something else explain the change?

Does Ashwagandha Make You Gain Weight?

Current research does not establish weight gain as a typical effect of ashwagandha. However, studies cannot rule out every individual reaction. A change in weight after you start it does not prove that the supplement caused it.

Ashwagandha is an herbal supplement that people often take for stress or sleep. Claims that it automatically slows your metabolism, increases body fat, or causes weight gain in women go beyond the available evidence.

Body weight also reflects more than fat. Fluid changes, constipation, food intake, and muscle growth can all affect the scale. For example, a small clinical trial found greater gains in muscle size and strength in men who took ashwagandha alongside resistance exercise. This does not show that the supplement causes weight gain on its own.

The product matters too. Gummies and powders may contain added sugar or other ingredients. Check the calories per serving, especially if you mix a powder with milk or add it to a shake. Those calories contribute to your overall diet.

Does Ashwagandha Increase Appetite?

Research does not show a consistent increase in appetite with ashwagandha. Some studies have instead found fewer food cravings and less emotional overeating in adults under stress.

Appetite and cravings are different. Hunger signals a need for food, while a craving often involves a desire for a particular food, even without hunger. A change in cravings does not necessarily mean a change in your usual appetite.

Stress can also affect people differently. Some eat more under stress, while others lose interest in food. If your appetite returns as you feel better, that alone does not prove that ashwagandha directly stimulates hunger.

If you develop persistent extreme hunger, especially with other symptoms, speak with a healthcare professional rather than assume the supplement explains it.

Does Ashwagandha Help With Weight Loss?

Some clinical trials suggest a possible benefit, but ashwagandha is not an established weight-loss treatment.

An eight-week trial involved 52 adults with excess weight and chronic stress. Participants who took ashwagandha lost an average of about 3% of their initial weight, compared with about 1.5% in the placebo group. They also reported improvements in certain food-craving and emotional-eating measures.

A 2025 trial that enrolled 100 adults also reported greater weight loss with ashwagandha than with a placebo over 24 weeks. These findings need confirmation in larger, independent studies and do not predict an individual person’s results.

Research on ashwagandha and cortisol may help explain interest in the supplement. However, a lower cortisol level does not automatically mean weight loss, and these trials do not prove that ashwagandha directly burns belly fat.

There is no established ashwagandha dose or best time of day for weight loss.

What Should You Do if You Gain Weight While You Take Ashwagandha?

Check the pattern and review the supplement with a doctor or pharmacist. A single higher reading on the scale provides less information than a steady rise over several weeks.

Useful steps include:

  • Track the change: Note when you started the supplement, its dose, and when your weight changed. Compare measurements under similar conditions.
  • Check the full label: Include added ingredients, serving size, and any milk, juice, or other foods you take with it.
  • Review other changes: Consider your appetite, activity, sleep, menstrual cycle, and any new medicines.
  • Mention other symptoms: Fatigue, constipation, or unusual sensitivity to cold can accompany thyroid problems. A clinician can assess whether you need tests.

Seek prompt medical care if weight rises rapidly, especially with swelling or shortness of breath
