Biography

Dr. Michiel Nijhoff is a highly accomplished medical professional with a strong background in internal medicine, endocrinology, and diabetes care. He obtained his medical degree with honors from Leiden University in 2009. Throughout his career, Dr. Nijhoff has gained extensive experience through various medical internships at renowned hospitals, including Groene Hart Hospital, Leyenburg Hospital, Bronovo Hospital, HAGA Hospital, Leiden University Medical Center, and Westeinde Hospital. Follow...ing his internships, Dr. Nijhoff embarked on a residency program in internal medicine at the HAGA Hospital in The Hague from 2009 to 2012. He continued his residency at the Leiden University Medical Center from 2013 to 2017, specializing in internal medicine and undertaking a fellowship in endocrinology. During his fellowship, he focused on clinical isolation and transplantation of islets of Langerhans, as well as the comprehensive management of patients before, during, and after islet transplantation. Since 2017, Dr. Nijhoff has been working as an internist, endocrinologist, and diabetologist at the Leiden University Medical Center. His responsibilities encompass a broad spectrum of medical care, including acute internal medicine and islet and pancreas transplantation. Additionally, he has been actively involved in clinical research and has authored more than 25 publications in his field. Dr. Nijhoff's dedication to the medical community extends beyond his clinical practice. He has undertaken various management and education activities to contribute to the advancement of medical knowledge. Notably, he served as the secretary of the Young Dutch Society for Endocrinology from 2014 to 2016. He was also involved in the organization of the Dutch Endocrine Meetings in 2016 and 2017, demonstrating his commitment to fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing within the field. As a testament to his contributions, Dr. Nijhoff has received several grants and awards. He was awarded the best oral presentation award at the EPITA meeting in Innsbruck in both 2015 and 2017. In 2018, he received the ESE young investigator award, and in 2019, he was honored with the IPITA scientific award. Dr. Nijhoff's expertise and passion for his field have gained recognition at an international level. He currently serves as a Transplant Coordinator for the Collaborative Islet Transplantation Registry (CITR) and is a member of the Young Investigator Committee of the International Pancreas and Islet Transplantation Association (IPITA). Furthermore, he is a board member of the European Pancreas and Islet Transplantation Association (EPITA).
