Dr. Majd Makhoul is a highly accomplished and experienced pediatric cardiologist. He began his medical journey at Al-Baath University's Faculty of Medicine in Homs, Syria, where he obtained his Doctor of Medicine Diploma (MD) from 1996 to 2002. Following his medical school education, Dr. Makhoul pursued surgical and ENT training at Damascus University Hospitals in Syria from 2002 to 2004.
Seeking further specialization, Dr. Makhoul embarked on post-graduate training, starting with a pediatric residency at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUB-MC) in Beirut, Lebanon, spanning from 2004 to 2007. He then continued his pediatric residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) in Iowa City, USA, from 2007 to 2009. Dr. Makhoul's dedication and expertise were recognized during his time at UIHC, where he served as the Pediatric Chief Resident from 2009 to 2010.
To enhance his skills and knowledge in the field of pediatric cardiology, Dr. Makhoul pursued a Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, from 2010 to 2013. During this fellowship, he also completed a focused third year in advanced imaging, specializing in fetal and transesophageal echocardiograms, from 2012 to 2013.
Dr. Makhoul's professional experiences reflect his commitment to providing high-quality care to children with cardiac conditions. From 2013 to 2022, he served as a Pediatric Cardiologist at the University of Kentucky's Kentucky Children's Hospital. Currently, he holds the position of Pediatric Cardiologist at Atrium Health Levine Children's Hospital.
Throughout his career, Dr. Makhoul has held academic appointments that highlight his dedication to teaching and advancing the field of pediatric cardiology. He served as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Division of Cardiology of the University of Kentucky from 2013 to 2019. Subsequently, he was promoted to Associate Professor of Pediatrics and held this position until 2022.
Dr. Makhoul's contributions to the field of pediatric cardiology have been recognized through various honors and awards. Notably, he received the Gail McGuinness, MD and William Bell, MD Award in 2008 for achieving the highest In-Training Exam score as a pediatric resident. Furthermore, his research and presentations have garnered recognition, including the Best Resident Abstract Presentation Award from the Midwest Pediatric Cardiology Society in 2008 and the Trainee Poster Session Award at the University of Iowa Children's Hospital Pediatric Research Day in 2010.
Dr. Makhoul's involvement in professional activities showcases his dedication to the advancement of pediatric cardiology. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American College of Cardiology (ACC), and the American Society of Echocardiography. He is an active member of the American Heart Association and has served on various committees within prestigious organizations such as the American College of Cardiology/KY Chapter and the American Society of Echocardiography.
