Dr. Julie Samantray is a medical doctor with a background in public health, epidemiology, and endocrinology. She received her MBBS degree from Sriram Chandra Bhanja Medical College, Utkal University in India, in 1992, followed by a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Michigan in 2002. She completed her internal medicine residency at the Detroit Medical Center, Wayne State University School of Medicine (WSUSOM) in 2007, followed by a clinical endocrinology fellowship at WSUSOM from 2008 to 2010.
Dr. Samantray has held various academic appointments at WSUSOM, including clinical instructor, clinical assistant professor, and assistant and associate professor of medicine, starting in 2010 and currently serving in the latter role. She has also been serving as the service chief of endocrinology at the Karmanos Cancer Center in Detroit since 2013 and holds hospitalist appointments at several hospitals in the Detroit area, including Hutzel Hospital, Detroit Receiving Hospital, and Harper Hospital.
In addition to her academic and hospital appointments, Dr. Samantray has also been involved in professional societies, including the American Thyroid Association and the Endocrine Society, and is a member of the University of Michigan School of Public Health Alumni Association and the All India Steel Medical Officers' Association. She has received several awards and honors, including the WSUSOM College Teaching Award in 2022, the WSUSOM Excellence in Teaching Award in 2021, and the Detroit Hour Top Doctor Award in endocrinology from 2018 to 2022. She was also nominated for the Gold Humanism Honor Society at WSUSOM in 2014 and received the Endocrine Society Trainee Day Award in 2009 and the American Thyroid Association Fellows Track grant in 2010. Additionally, she was named the Best Resident at the John D Dingell Veteran Affairs Hospital in Detroit in 2005.
