Biography

Dr. Didier Verhoeven is a highly accomplished medical professional with a distinguished career in the field of oncology. His journey began with a medical degree from the University of Antwerp in 1983, where he graduated with distinction. Following this, he pursued a Master's Degree in medical and pharmaceutical research at the University of Brussels, specializing in breast cancer. His master's thesis focused on "Infiltration and stroma in breast cancer." Throughout his academic journey, Dr. Verh...oeven acquired extensive knowledge in various disciplines, including cancer research, cell biology, pathology, immunology, and more. His passion for breast cancer research led him to complete a Ph.D. thesis titled "Tumour cell proliferation and stromal changes in breast cancer." Throughout his career, Dr. Verhoeven has held various positions, including serving as a full-time consultant in medical oncology at the Hospital of North Antwerp (KLINA) since 1993. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Verhoeven has actively contributed to the advancement of breast cancer care. He has been the chairman of the Breast Clinic Voorkempen, which oversees the treatment and management of over 300 new breast cancer patients each year. Dr. Verhoeven has also made significant contributions to education and research. He has been involved in supervising and coordinating student training programs, promoting evidence-based oncology, and participating in clinical studies. His leadership extends to international collaborations, where he has served as an associate editor for the European Journal of Breast Health. Dr. Verhoeven is a member of numerous scientific societies and committees related to oncology. In 2018 Oxford University Press accepted his book: "Breast Cancer: Global Quality Care" for publication (14/11/2019) (co-editors: C. Kaufman, US, R. Mansel, UK and S. Siesling, The Netherlands; with extensive book review in ASCO-Post, 2020). The second open-access edition was approved in June 2023 by the Publication Committee of OUP (publication expected at the end of 2024). In November 2021, he was asked to participate in the Breast Cancer Lancet Commission, a contributor to the Global Breast Cancer initiative of the WHO (2023).
