Dr. Marcovalerio Melis received his medical degree from the School of Medicine of the University of Cagliari. He also completed various postdoctoral training programs, including a Surgical Oncology Fellowship at Moffitt Cancer Center from 2006-2008, a Surgery Residency at the University of Chicago from 2001-2006, and a Surgery Residency at the University of Cagliari from 1994-1999.
Dr. Melis's faculty academic appointments began in 2008 at NYU Langone Health as an Assistant Professor of Surgery, and he has since held positions at various institutions, including as an Associate Professor of Surgery at NYU Langone Health from 2014-2020 and as a Professor of Surgery at Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell since 2022.
Dr. Melis has held appointments at several hospitals and affiliated institutions throughout his career, including as a Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology and a Site Director of the Department of Surgery at New York Harbor Healthcare System, and Chief of Surgery at VA Hospital. Additionally, he has held administrative leadership positions, such as Chief Surgical Consultant at the Veterans Integrated Service Network and Cancer Liaison Physician for the American College of Surgeons. Currently, Dr. Melis is the Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology at the Phelps Hospital and a Staff Attending Surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital.
Dr. Melis has also published extensively throughout his career, with over 70 publications to his name. These publications include articles in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters covering a range of topics related to surgery and surgical oncology.
Dr. Melis received honors and prizes for his contribution to the field, including the SSAT Poster of Distinction at Digestive Disease Week in 2014 and the David Jagelman Prize for Most Outstanding Poster Presentation at the III International Meeting on Recent Progress in Oncology in 2000.
