Biography

Dr. Christopher Peters is an accomplished medical professional with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of Leeds Medical School, which he obtained in 2002, and a PhD obtained from Cambridge in 2010. In terms of employment, Dr. Peters has held various positions that have contributed to his expertise and professional development. Since September 2016, he has been a Clinical Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London and an Honorary Consultant Upper GI Surgeon... at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in London. In addition, he currently serves as the Deputy Medical Director at Medefer since December 2021 and holds the position of Clinical Lead for General Surgery at Medefer since June 2020. Dr. Peters has gained extensive experience and expertise through his involvement in various surgical specialties and hospitals. He has performed a wide range of procedures, including transhiatal, 2-stage, 3-stage, and left thoracoabdominal approaches to the esophagus and stomach. His training at Imperial College London equipped him to perform radical lymphadenectomies and other extended indication surgeries. Furthermore, he serves as the gastric cancer lead for the UK-wide Pressurised Intra Peritoneal Aerosolized Chemotherapy trial, PICCOS, funded by the NIHR EME scheme. In addition to his work in esophago-gastric cancer, Dr. Peters is proficient in conducting various benign procedures, such as complex redo fundoplications and fundoplications in lung transplant patients. He is actively involved in emergency upper GI rota at Imperial and 3 Counties, managing complex cases like oesophageal perforations and incarcerated intrathoracic stomachs. He also possesses expertise in trauma care, gained from his experience in the ITU at St James Hospital, Leeds, and handling complex trauma cases in St Mary's Major Trauma Centre. Dr. Peters has published over 35 articles, demonstrating his commitment to advancing medical knowledge. He holds prestigious memberships, including being a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (England) and a Member of the Association of Upper GI Surgeons (AUGIS). He is also a member of the British Society of Gastroenterology Oesophageal and Research Committees, representing Upper GI Surgeons and Chairs the prestigious National Cancer Research Institute Oesophago-Gastric Subgroup. Throughout his career, Dr. Peters has received numerous prizes and awards that highlight his dedication and excellence in his field. Most notably, he was a recipient of the British Journal of Surgery prize at the Association of Upper GI Surgeons in 2009, and the British Association of Surgical Oncology in 2015. He was first placed at the British Society of Gastroenterology Oesophageal section in 2010 and had a Plenary Abstract of Distinction at Digestive Disease Week in the same year. He currently holds a National Clinical Excellence award reflecting his contribution to Upper Gastrointestinal surgery in the United Kingdom.
