Biography

Dr. Francesco DiMeco is a specialist in Neurosurgery. After finishing his medical studies at the University of Milan, he completed a fellowship in Oncological Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore (USA). Dr. DiMeco is Full Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Milan, Director of the School of Specialization in Neurosurgery, and Director of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Fondazione Neurological Institute C. Besta of Milan, Italy. He is also Assistant Professor (adjunct) at Johns Hopkins Medical School's Department of Neurosurgery. Dr. DiMeco founded the first Neurosurgical Simulation Center in Europe "Besta NeuroSim Center", which is also one of the best-equipped Simulation Centers in the world.

Dr. DiMeco mainly deals with brain tumors such as gliomas, glioblastomas, meningiomas, acoustic neuromas, and ependymomas. His interest is also in both intramedullary and intradural extramedullary spinal tumors. Focusing on cancers of the nervous system he has published more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific articles and many book chapters.

Dr. DiMeco has gained considerable experience in the loco-regional treatment of brain tumors and has distinguished himself worldwide for collaborating in the discovery of glioma cancer stem cells. In this regard, he collaborated in the identification of innovative glioblastoma treatment strategies based on the induction of stem cell differentiation by publishing a pioneering article in the journal Nature. Recently his studies have extended to the field of intraoperative imaging and image-guided surgery, becoming a world leader in the use of intraoperative ultrasound. Lastly, he is a world-renowned expert in the field of Focused Ultrasound, a novel treatment strategy for a variety of CNS diseases.
