Biography

Dr. Richard Edwards is a highly qualified and experienced neurosurgeon specializing in both adult and pediatric neurosurgery. He holds an MD degree from the University of London, where he conducted a study on endoscopic choroid plexus coagulation for the treatment of hydrocephalus. Prior to that, he obtained his MB BS from St. Mary's Hospital Medical School, Imperial College, London University in 1994. Dr. Edwards currently holds two key positions. Since May 2014, he has been serving as a Con...sultant Pediatric Neurosurgeon and Head of Specialty at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. Additionally, he works as a Consultant Neurosurgeon at Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust. Dr. Edwards has a wide range of clinical and academic interests. In his clinical practice, he focuses on hydrocephalus and other cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) disorders in both adults and children. He has expertise in complex pediatric cervical spine surgery, spinal dysraphism surgery, arteriovenous malformation and moyamoya disease surgery, as well as brain tumor surgery for both pediatric and adult patients. He has pioneered the use of intra-operative neurophysiological monitoring to enhance the safety and effectiveness of tumor removal, specifically brainstem tumors and posterior fossa ependymomas. He also specializes in surgery for spasticity in both adults and children and has contributed to the development of the National Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy service for children with cerebral palsy. In the field of research, Dr. Edwards has a particular interest in hydrocephalus and head injury. He is the only European member of the Adult Hydrocephalus Clinical Research Network and has been involved in various studies related to head injury in children. He has contributed to the development of guidelines for the management of infants with suspected non-accidental head injuries in Bristol. Dr. Edwards has published over 125 scientific publications and is frequently invited to lecture on the assessment and management of acute head and spinal injuries in children. In addition to his clinical and academic work, Dr. Edwards is actively involved in various committees and organizations. He serves as the Chairman of the CSF Disorders Group of the Society of British Neurological Surgeons and is a member of the steering committee for the UK National Hydrocephalus Shunt Registry. He has also held positions such as Chairman of the British Paediatric Neurosurgery Group, Council Member of the Society of British Neurological Surgeons, and Board Member of the International Society for Hydrocephalus and CSF Disorders. He has been a Training Program Director for Neurosurgery in the Severn and Peninsular Deaneries in the South West UK.
