Dr. Miguel Martin is a Medical Oncologist based in Madrid, Spain. Since 1990, Dr. Martin has been fully devoted to breast cancer research and treatment. He is a Professor of Medicine at the Complutense University and is currently Head of Medical Oncology Services at Gregorio Maranon General University Hospital. He received his medical degree at the University of Valladolid and completed his fellowship and residency at the San Carlos University Hospital, Madrid. Dr. Martin's areas of research include systemic treatment in all stages of breast cancer, where he has participated in and led many national and international clinical trials. In 1990-1991 Dr. Martin visited the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of Washington Medical Center de Seattle (EEUU), where he worked on high-dose chemotherapy with bone marrow transplantation for breast cancer.
Dr. Martin is an Editor of several medical journals. He was a member of the International Editorial Board of the journal Lancet Oncology, as well
as other international journals (European Journal of Clinical & Medical Oncology, Cancer & Chemotherapy Reviews). Dr. Martin has published more than 790 articles in peer-reviewed medical journals. He is the first or corresponding author of original papers and editorials published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Lancet Oncology, Seminars in Oncology, British Journal of Cancer, The Oncologist, and Annals of Oncology among others. He has contributed to more than 350 presentations at international medical meetings and has presented invited lectures in several countries, including the USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Portugal, Sweden, Hungary, China, India, Vietnam, Argentina, Chili, Mexico, Guatemala, and Costa Rica. In 1995, Dr. Martin created GEICAM (Spanish Group for Breast Cancer Research), a network involving more than 140 Spanish institutions, and since its foundation, he has been the Chairman of the Group. GEICAM has carried out more than 120 clinical, translational, and epidemiological studies in the field of breast cancer.
Since 2001, Dr. Martin has been serving as a member of the Board of Directors and of the Scientific Steering Committee of TRIO, an international not-for-profit clinical research organization involving 45 different countries.
Dr. Martin is a full member of several scientific societies: ASCO, ESMO, SEOM, ASBD, EBMT, ABMT, and MASCC. He was the Spanish representative at ESMO from 2003 to 2006. In 2006, he was appointed European Liason of the International Affairs Committee of ASCO. He has served as a member of the panel of the International Consensus Conference of Early Breast Cancer (St Gallen) and is currently a member of the Steering Committee of Early Breast Cancer Trialists Cooperative Group (Oxford, UK). In 2012, Dr. Martin was nominated as an Advisor of the Spanish Ministry of Health. He was nominated Board Member of the National Committee of the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (2013). In June 2014, he was named reviewer of the ANEP. In March 2015, Dr. Martin was named Numerary Academic of the Spanish Medical Surgery Academy. From October 2015 till October 2017, Dr. Martin held the position of President of the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology. In September 2017, he received the ESMO 2017 Award.
