Biography

Dr. James Lilja is a highly accomplished medical professional with extensive expertise in the field of gynecologic oncology. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1993. Following this, he embarked on a residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Texas/MD Anderson Health Science Center, affiliated with the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. To further enhance his specialization, Dr. Lilja pursued a fello...wship in Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Michigan Medical Center's Division of Gynecologic Oncology in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He completed this fellowship from 1997 to 2000, gaining valuable experience in the field. In 2000, Dr. Lilja established his own practice, Bay Area Gynecology Oncology, Inc.. As the owner, he has been providing exceptional gynecologic oncology services to patients since its inception. Alongside his private practice, he has held significant positions in various medical organizations and institutions. Currently, Dr. Lilja also serves as a Gynecologic Oncologist at Natividad Medical Center and at Washington Township Medical Foundation. From 2011 to 2015, Dr. Lilja served as the Chief Medical Officer of ThermalCore, Inc., a medical device company based in Los Gatos, California, operating under the name Verthermia. In this role, he contributed his medical expertise to the development and advancement of medical devices. In 2013, Dr. Lilja took on the responsibility of Director of the Gynecologic Oncology Program at Washington Hospital in Fremont, California. He held this position until 2016. During the same period, he also served as the Director of Medical Specialties (Oncology) at O'Connor Hospital in San Jose, California. Dr. Lilja also worked at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital as a Gynecologic Oncologist from 2018 to 2022. Dr. Lilja has made significant contributions to the medical field through his academic appointments as well. He served as the Division Director in the Department of Gynecologic Oncology at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, California, from 2000 to 2004. Prior to this, he worked as a Galloway Fellow at the prestigious Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, New York, in 1996. Throughout his career, Dr. Lilja has been actively involved in research and clinical trials. Since 2006, he has been the Principal Investigator and Author of a clinical trial on intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemotherapy utilizing cisplatin, mitomycin C, and doxorubicin chemotherapy in peritoneal surface cancers at Good Samaritan Hospital. Dr. Lilja's exceptional work has been recognized through several awards and honors. He received the Outstanding Chief Resident award from the University of Texas Health Science Center, University of Texas Medical School at Houston, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences in 1996-1997. Additionally, he was presented with the APGO/Organon Fellowship Research Award in Education in 1998 for his Internet educational project titled "Gynecologic Oncology Web Server" while at the University of Michigan School of Medicine. As an active member of the medical community, Dr. Lilja has been affiliated with the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists since 2000. He is also an accomplished author with more than five publications to his credit.
