What IO Means in Medicine

IO stands for Intraosseous.

It describes a method of delivering fluids or medications directly into the bone marrow. The marrow contains many blood vessels, so medicines enter the bloodstream quickly.

Providers use IO access when they cannot place an IV line fast enough.

Why IO Access Is Used

IO access allows rapid treatment in emergencies.

Healthcare teams may use it when:

• A patient is in cardiac arrest
• Severe trauma occurs
• Veins collapse due to shock or dehydration
• IV access is difficult or delayed
• Immediate medication delivery is needed

IO provides a fast alternative when time is critical.

How IO Access Is Performed

A trained provider inserts a specialized needle into the bone. Common sites include:

• The tibia (shin bone)
• The humerus (upper arm bone)
• The sternum (breastbone)

Once the needle enters the bone marrow, providers can give fluids, medications, or blood products.

When IO Access Is Removed

IO lines are temporary. Providers usually remove them once a stable IV line is established.

Most IO lines stay in place less than 24 hours.

IO and IV access both deliver medications into the bloodstream.
