Biography

Dr. Gertjan Kaspers is a highly accomplished Pediatric Oncologist with expertise in acute myeloid leukemia and acute promyelocytic leukemia. He obtained his medical degree with honors from VU Amsterdam and completed his PhD research on "Glucocorticoid response in vivo and in vitro in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia" at Amsterdam UMC, VU Amsterdam. He has nearly 20 years of experience as a Pediatric Oncologist/Hematologist at Amsterdam UMC, VU Amsterdam, where he currently serves as a Full... professor of Pediatric Oncology. Dr. Kaspers is the author of 6 books and has more than 500 publications to his name. He is an active member of various national and international scientific associations, including the Royal Dutch Society of Medicine, the International Society of Pediatric Oncology, and the American Society of Hematology. He is also the Chairman of the Board of the Dutch Association for Pediatrics (NVK), section Oncology. Dr. Kaspers has held numerous leadership roles in the field of pediatric oncology, including Chairman of the Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia Committee for the Dutch Childhood Oncology Group (DCOG), Chairman of the DCOG Protocol Committee for newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and Chairman of the International Outreach program at the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology. He is also a supervisor for the fellowship program in pediatric oncology at the Princess Máxima Center. Dr. Kaspers has received several awards throughout his career, including the royal award "Knight in the order of the Dutch Lion" in 2022 and recognition as a 'Melvin Jones Fellow' by the Lions Club International Foundation in 2021. He has also won numerous best poster awards at various symposia and was the recipient of the Dutch PHARMACIA Research Grant in 1993.
