Dr. Berthold Bein is a highly accomplished and renowned Professor of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine with extensive work experience in the field. He is currently serving as the Head of the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the Asklepios Hospital St. Georg in Hamburg, Germany, a hospital that also hosts the German branch of Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary.
Dr. Bein has spent over three decades working in the field of anesthesiology and intensive care medicine, with various roles at different institutions. He served as a Resident in the Department of Anaesthesiology at the Martha-Maria Hospital in Munich, Germany, from 1989-1992, and subsequently at the Department of Anesthesiology at the University Hospital Eppendorf in Hamburg, Germany, from 1993-2000. From 2004-2014, he was the Associate Medical Director and Head of the Research Department in the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the University Hospital Kiel, Germany, before assuming his current role at the Asklepios Hospital St. Georg in 2014.
Dr. Bein's expertise in the fields of cardiothoracic, vascular, and trauma anesthesia, and emergency medicine is highly regarded. His research interests are primarily focused on the prevention of perioperative hypothermia, evaluating monitoring devices, cardiovascular drugs, anesthetic preconditioning, patient blood management, and airway devices. He has authored/co-authored over 325 peer-reviewed manuscripts in his career.
Dr. Bein is affiliated with various professional organizations, including the German Society for Anesthesiology & Intensive Care Medicine (DGAI), the Professional Association of German Anesthetists (BDA), the German Society for Interdisciplinary Intensive Care Medicine (DIVI), the European Society of Anaesthesiology (ESA), and the European Resuscitation Council (ERC).
Dr. Bein has been the recipient of various awards in his career, including the Rudolf Frey Prize for Emergency Medicine awarded by the German Society for Anesthesiology & Intensive Care Medicine (DGAI) in Leipzig, Germany, in 2006 and the POSTER prize awarded by Akzo-Nobel in Barcelona, Spain, in 2001.
