Prof. Dr. med. Axel Heidenreich received his Medical education from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in Germany and the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, United States. He has held various senior positions in Urology and Urologic Oncology at the University of Marburg, the University of Cologne, and the University Hospital RWTH Aachen. Currently, Prof. Dr. med. Heidenreich is the Director and Chairman of the Department of Urology at the University of Cologne, Germany’s major university hospital urological department.
Prof. Dr. med. Heidenreich's research interests and clinical activities lie in the most complex interventions in advanced cancer stages. He is an author of innovative surgical techniques in prostate, bladder, and testicular surgery. Prof. Dr. med. Heidenreich has more than 600 peer-reviewed publications, which include more than 20 books and about 110 book chapters.
For his outstanding achievements in Urology and Urologic Oncology, Prof. Dr. med. Heidenreich has received numerous scientific awards. He is also an active board member of various societies, associations, and working groups, including the Association of Urological Oncology, the European Society for Oncological Urology, and the German Working Group on Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer.
